Comment: This is a iron oxide coated skeletal quartz specimen. This is completely natural the way it was formed in the earth millions of years ago. South Carolina is one of the few places in the world that this type of skeletal crystallization is found. The skeletal quartz represents internal and external dissolution - growth features from unstable conditions (growing and dissolving during crystallization) This giving the unusual step like appearance and the six legged rib like shape of termination.

Minerals: Quartz (SiO2)
