Comment: Ankerite is named after Professor M. J. Anker, an Austrian mineralogist. Ankerite's formula is often written as CaFe(CO3)2; but there is actually a significant amount of magnesium and manganese substitution for the iron and so the formula should be written as it is above. Ankerite forms in iron rich hydrothermal veins and metamorphic rocks with sulfides and other iron minerals. In composition it is closely related to dolomite, but differs from this in having magnesium replaced by varying amounts of iron(II) and manganese.

Minerals: Ankerite (Ca(Fe++,Mg,Mn)(CO3)2)
